sanchez. thanks for joining us. a high risk of failure. that is the this morning from a pg&e document about the very pipeline that exploded two-and-a-half days ago. despite that assessment, the document shows that pg&e did not plan to replace that pipeline for another three years. nbc bay area's tracy grant is live in san bruno this morning with the details on the investigation. good morning, tracy. >> reporter: good morning, kris. we're here live at the red cross staging area here at the bay hill shopping center in san bruno. now, it's a rather disturbing document from pg&e. and no doubt, the utility and the national transportation safety board will face a lot of questions about it today at a press conference that is scheduled to begin right here in about an hour. now, it may end up confirming what caused the explosion that blasted dozens of homes and killed seven people thursday in the san bruno neighborhood, and could help authorities determine who is to blame. the documents show that pg&e knew that the section of the pipe that ruptured was at a high risk to fail. and for three yea

a block west of the grand lake theater late this afternoon. amy holyfield to take us through what happened. >> reporter: even police at the scene tell me they haven't seen an accident this big before and it as miracle and it is amazing that everybody walked away. a police sargeant told me that the driver of the dump truck was just released from the hospital. the truck plowed into a row of cars sitting at a red light. the driver of the dump truck said his brakes failed and he told us about how he felt when heard everybody survived the crash. >> i was happy and hopefully i can get ahold of the people that got hurt and say sorry, something, anything, you know. i didn't do it on purpose, you know. but i ruined their day big-time, you know, their cars are smashed. >> reporter: the driver did not want to give his last name. this happened about 4:30 this afternoon at mcarthur boulevard and grand avenue at the grand avenue exit ramp off of 580. it has been closed ever since as officers try to clear the scene. they are hoping to get it open in the next few minutes and it looks like they are just ab

for joining us. one east bay neighborhood is waking up to closed streets, construction equipment and a watery mess. terry mcsweeney joins us live from pleasant hill with the latest on a frustrating water main break. what we call breaking news. terry? >> double breaker. broke eight days ago, broke last night here near cay cay way. they've still got the water coming out of the ground here. they say they're doing that to stabilize the pressure and they do have water back to the 40 homes and 100 plus people who were without water, again, since about 7:30 last night. not news to the people out here. it was eight days ago, the very same pipe broke in a different spot but the very same pipe broke. they were without water yet again. crews have come out. they have circumvented the break and getting water to the homes. the street though is in a very, very interesting location. four schools are located near here, including diablo valley college. so in about an hour or so, students start walking, parents start driving their kids to school and this becomes a very busy street. they hope to have the street

they found 20- pounds of this ammonium, a chemical used to make explosives. this is the bomb squad. they said they cannot deal with this type of situation and they called in the atf instead and these two separate scenes. it wasn't just chemicals found in the upland court. the bodies of two women overnight. the police say it was a grisly scene. this is the home of 67-year-old dena allen. allen and her friend, carol smarkt, have been missing since wednesday. this is also a home where suspected killer efren valdemoro was known to say, sometimes trying to pass himself off as allen's son. here's where the story takes another turn -- police say the bodies of these two women had been in this home for a while and apparently during that time, allen husband, who reported her missing, had been living in the home. so he's been arrested and is in custody at this hour. how is this all connected to valdemoro? well, that's still unclear. police say all of this may not be connected to the hercules case in which valdemoro is suspected of killing an elderly man on friday. that man's son is still missing. if we

morning. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew in for brent. garvin thomas will be joining us from san bruno throughout the morning. >> right now we want to fill you in on the latest details about the san bruno explosion. as of this moment, one person is confirmed dead. and more than 20 people are injured. the explosion and fire destroyed 53 homes, damaged at least another 120. >> safety crews will get together in about an hour. they will survey the damage and decide when it's time to start to search for survivors, for more dead. we have at least one confirmed death, search and rescue operations could begin any time. >> if this is the first time you're hearing about what happened, here's the details. the initial explosion actually happened just after 6:00 last night near glenn view park in san bruno. witnesses say flames shot 200 feet to 300 feet in the air. winds fueled those flames. they jumped from house to house to house in the neighborhood. >> we have new information coming from the fire chief in the area that is now six people have died in this fire. so it has gone from one c

on this thursday at 5:00. thanks for joining us. i'm kristen sze. >> i'm eric thomas. in the news this morning bulldozers will fan out through the san bruno neighborhood devastated by a natural gas explosion and fire. officials say it's time to begin removing the demolished homes. jenelle wang is live in san bruno with more on the story. >> cleanup crews will start coming in at 8:00 this morning to clean out all the debris at this disaster site. they're expected to be here the next four to six weeks. the first job to remove close to two dozen charred cars so they can get the heavy machinery in. then remove debris from the hot zones first. 34 homes to be cleared but could be more later. the cost is about 30 to $40,000 for each job site. for the victims that lost everything, still a lot of questions as the bills pile up. >> as far as insurance. >> what we all went through -- i don't know when that healing process starts to begin. we're still numb. >> as cleanup continues, water trucks will continue to water down the ash to reduce any toxic levels. the san jose county health department has brough

federal investigators this morning and joins you now -- and joins us now with this live report. >> reporter: good morning, tori. yes, it's been almost a week since this fireball and explosion and fire here in san bruno. there are still so many questions. the ntsb is out here this morning. we're getting more information about where this investigation is headed. key among the question is how did this start, obviously and why did it burn so long? let's talk about the cause. the ntsb has been asking for anyone to come forward if they smelled gas in the days leading up to the explosion. there have been about 90 e- mails sent to the ntsb. but the ntsb said they only had one person who smelled gas and that was two or three weeks before this happened. if they didn't smell gas, that would be a clue. >> if people smell gas in advance, that suggests a failure, where gas is coming out and people smell it. that's a different kind of failure than a catastrophic failure. that would help us determine the cause of this explosion. that's why that's so crucial to us. >> reporter: there's also the

francis is in san bruno with the latest for us. hello, monty. >> the name of the person who filed this lawsuit is steve dare. his house was not damaged in the fire, but he was evacuated from his home for three days. mr. dare is suing pg&e and san mateo superior county court. he names himself and others similarly situated indicating this could become a class action lawsuit. the lawsuit was filed yesterday, it accuses pg&e for negligence for the explosion that killed seven people and destroyed 40 homes here on september 9th. the suit seeks to turn over the victim's fund set up by pg&e by a third party that would manage that money. it would also seek damages beyond that amount. pg&e is expected to turn over that list in its 100 most vulnerable sites, state senator leyland ye's office tells us the information is scheduled to be handed over 2:00 monday afternoon. >> the people and residents have a right to know where these pipes are so they can make a conscious decision, should i live here? >> pg&e has refused to turn over the list, arguing making the information public would be a thre
